Overview

Schools may use supervision and substitution funding to pay teachers and external supervisors for approved duties. Different requirements apply depending on whether the person is a qualified teacher or an external supervisor. Where a teacher has opted out of the supervision and substitution scheme, the school may receive a grant to support the provision of supervision and substitution duties. This grant cannot be used to pay full-time teachers, or teachers who have opted out of the scheme, for supervision and substitution duties on a casual or non-pensionable basis. The detailed guidance explains who may carry out these duties, payroll requirements, accounting treatment and where to find the current approved rates of pay.
